The number of supermarkets in the Nizhny Novgorod region has increased by 47.2% over five years.

      April 17, 2026 17:13 Economy By the end of 2025, there were more than 16,300 retail outlets operating in the Nizhny Novgorod region — from large hypermarkets to small neighborhood stores. According to Nizhny Novgorod Statistics, the region had 16,329 stores, 3,066 non-stationary trading facilities, and 1,931 pharmacy organizations. Among non-stationary trade, there were 1,697 pavilions and 1,369 stalls and kiosks. Over the past five years, the number of pharmacies has significantly increased. Their number has grown by 18.7%. At the same time, the number of stalls and kiosks has decreased by 34%, and pavilions by 15.2%. The number of stores during this period increased by 4.4%. However, the total area of retail space decreased by 2.6%, amounting to 3,114 thousand square meters. The most common format is universal and specialized non-food stores. Their share reaches 46.8% of the total number of retail points. Minimarkets account for 28.4%, while universal and specialized food stores make up 15.7%. Supermarkets constitute 8.8% of all stores in the region. Over five years, their number has increased by 47.2%. At the same time, the number of hypermarkets has decreased by more than half — by 54.8%, and they now occupy only 0.3% of the market. The retail network is still predominantly concentrated in cities and urban-type settlements. Here, 89.4% of pavilions, 85.9% of pharmacies, 81.4% of stalls and kiosks, and 81.3% of all stores in the region are located. In urban areas, more than half of the retail points — 52.2% — are universal and specialized non-food stores. In rural areas, minimarkets prevail, their share reaching 60.7%. Additionally, at the end of the year, there were six retail markets operating in the region — three universal and three specialized. Throughout 2025, 526 fairs were organized.
