Experts highly praised the demographic policy of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
April 16, 2026 09:15 Society The demographic policy of the Nizhny Novgorod region received positive feedback from experts who participated in the program (18+) by journalist and blogger Yuri Podolyaka on VK Video. The episode titled "The Fight Against Abortions: The Experience of Russia..." was published on April 15. The program's description emphasizes that the topic discussed goes beyond just a medical or social agenda. "The fight against abortions is not only a fight for saving lives. It is also a fight for preserving (or rather restoring) morality. But conducting it straightforwardly, as the experiences of Poland and Romania show, is incorrect. A direct method is not needed. And it has already begun to be explored." During the program, Yuri Podolyaka examines the issue of abortions as part of a demographic strategy, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach. This involves supporting women, accompanying pregnancies, and involving specialists—doctors, psychologists, as well as public organizations. A separate block of discussion was dedicated to regional practices aimed at reducing the number of abortions. In this context, Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region Gleb Nikitin is positively mentioned as one of the initiators of implementing such measures at the regional level. As the program's author noted, the head of the region independently initiated cooperation with the expert community and invited specialists to work together. "Yes, Gleb Sergeyevich, thank you very much. In fact, he is one of the most remarkable governors... He is the governor who has put the solution to the demographic issue at the forefront... It is he who allocates a significant amount of financial resources to this topic," noted Maria Studenikina, founder of the ANO "Save a Life." According to her, a systematic policy is being formed in the region, centered on the task of preserving children's lives. "Friends, our main focus right now is the preservation of children's lives." She also mentioned that the governor organizes meetings with obstetricians-gynecologists and psychologists, uniting specialists around a common task. At the same time, training, professional development, and work with the medical community are ongoing. Experts emphasized that effective demographic policy is only possible with a comprehensive approach that includes family support, educational activities, interaction between various agencies, and active participation of regional authorities. In their opinion, the Nizhny Novgorod region demonstrates such a systematic model, focused on long-term results and strengthening the institution of family. Earlier, Yuri Podolyaka published a large interview with Gleb Nikitin, in which he touched on specific indicators. In particular, of the 55 private clinics providing abortion services, only three continued to operate. Additionally, in January-February of the current year, the region recorded 520 cases of abortions—136 fewer than in the same period last year. It was also reported that the "Emergency Demographic Assistance" project helped save more than 600 lives in 2025. The initiative is implemented within the framework of the demographic sustainability program "FOUNDATION" and aims to support women in difficult life situations.
