The criminal who had been hiding for 28 years was caught in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

      On April 10, 2026, at 11:31, Incidents: A man who had been on the run for almost 28 years after escaping from a pre-trial detention center in Cherkessk was detained in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This was reported on the website of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia.

      According to the agency, the escape occurred in 1998. At that time, five convicted individuals, while in a cell at SIZO-1, sawed through the window bars and escaped. In the same year, three of the fugitives were apprehended, one died during a gang conflict. One of the escapees remained wanted for almost three decades.

      The man, convicted of robbery and theft, had been living in the Nizhny Novgorod region all this time, using fake documents.

      Employees of the penal enforcement system established his whereabouts and conducted an operation to detain him. Representatives from two territorial bodies of the Federal Penitentiary Service, including the Nizhny Novgorod branch, participated in the operation.

      During the document check, the man admitted that he was impersonating another person. He was taken to the police station, where fingerprinting confirmed the identity of the wanted individual.

      After his identity was established, he was placed in the investigative isolation ward of Nizhny Novgorod.

      Earlier, it was reported that the police solved a bloody murder case from 27 years ago in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
