Seasonal fishing restrictions are being introduced at the Cheboksary Reservoir.

      April 9, 2026 14:00 Society From April 10, fish spawning has begun in the Cheboksary Reservoir and its tributaries. In this regard, seasonal restrictions on recreational fishing are being introduced in the region, as well as a complete ban on commercial fishing. The restrictions will be in effect until June 10 inclusive, the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife Protection of the Nizhny Novgorod Region reported. The agency emphasized that such measures are introduced annually and are necessary for the preservation of fish resources and the maintenance of ecological balance. They noted that the spawning period applies to all water bodies in the region regardless of their status. According to the current fishing regulations, the terms of restrictions vary depending on the water body:

       from April 1 to June 10 — on the Oka River above the Cheboksary Reservoir dam zone with tributaries within the region;

       from April 10 to June 10 — on the Cheboksary Reservoir with tributaries (except for the specified section of the Oka);

       from April 15 to June 15 — on the Gorky Reservoir, its tributaries, and lakes in the region.

      The boundary of the protected water zone of the Cheboksary Reservoir and the Oka runs along the road from the village of Khabarskoye to the Oka River. The list of spawning areas is approved by a separate appendix to the fishing regulations and published on the official website of the agency. The Ministry of Forestry also clarified that during the spawning period, fishing with spinning is completely prohibited. Only recreational fishing from the shore outside the spawning areas is allowed — with a float or bottom rod with no more than two hooks. The daily catch limit for one person is up to 5 kg. Violating fishing rules entails administrative responsibility: fines for individuals range from 2,000 to 5,000 rubles, and confiscation of the vessel and fishing gear is possible. For illegal extraction of aquatic biological resources, criminal liability is also provided — fines up to 500,000 rubles, or corrective labor, or imprisonment for up to two years. Let us remind you that investors are being offered to create a fish farming enterprise in the Nizhny Novgorod region. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
