Nikita Shangin: "Pension indexing provides an additional effect"
April 9, 2026 13:21 Society Since April 1, 2026, Russia is undergoing a planned indexation of social pensions — the increase is 6.8%. This measure is aimed at maintaining the purchasing power and supporting the income of citizens for whom social pensions are the main source of funds. Indexation is carried out annually and takes into account the level of inflation and the economic indicators of the country.
The head of the Department of Philosophy, Sociology, and Psychology of Management at the Presidential Academy, Nikita Shangin, noted that the state continues to fulfill its social obligations. The increase will affect nearly 4.3 million people.
“The state continues to fulfill its obligations and, as part of the planned indexation, compensates for inflation, which has averaged around these values since the last increase,” said the expert from the Presidential Academy.
The actual amount of payment in each specific case may vary. It depends on the type of social pension — whether it is disability payments, survivor benefits, or social pensions for the elderly who have not accumulated the necessary work experience for a retirement pension. Additionally, the final amount may be influenced by regional supplements, applicable coefficients, and other allowances provided by law.
Nikita Shangin also noted that the planned support for pensioners includes measures such as additional one-time payments to veterans of the Great Patriotic War by May 9 in connection with the anniversary of Victory, which, according to him, is becoming a good tradition.
“It is worth noting separately that support for pensioners is not just support for a separate group of citizens, but also support for families. In Russia, inter-household connections are common, where older and younger generations help each other, thereby raising the overall standard of living. In this situation, supporting some households triggers additional effects, and thus we can speak of indirect measures to support the entire Russian society,” said Nikita Shangin.
