Mass poisoning in the Uren district has turned into a criminal case.

      On April 8, 2026, at 12:31, Incidents A criminal case has been initiated regarding the mass poisoning in the Uren district of the Nizhny Novgorod region, reported the Investigative Committee of Russia for the region. According to the investigation, from April 5 to 7, several people were hospitalized with signs of food poisoning (according to local authorities, five people were hospitalized. — Ed. note). According to the patients, they all drank raw water from the central water supply. The case was initiated under part 1 of article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation "Provision of services that do not meet the safety requirements for the life and health of consumers." A set of investigative actions is being conducted to establish the circumstances of the incident. This includes assigning studies on samples of tap water. The progress and results of the investigation are under the control of the regional prosecutor's office. There, by the way, they have begun their own inspection, within which they will assess the implementation of legislation by resource-supplying organizations in providing public services to the population. Earlier, the head of the Uren district, Sergey Babintsev, commented on the poisoning situation. According to him, more than 50 people sought medical attention with symptoms of intestinal infection. Schools and kindergartens have temporarily switched to remote learning. "We will urgently conclude a contract with specialized firms to flush the entire water supply system. During this period, we will have to completely shut off the water supply, at least in the part of the city where the outbreak of infection occurred," the official said.
