The Oleg Deripaska Foundation "Free Business" held an educational intensive for physics and mathematics teachers.
The Oleg Deripaska Foundation "Free Business," with the support of the Gorky Automobile Plant, organized a "Spring School for Physics and Mathematics Teachers" in Nizhny Novgorod. Classes were conducted by professors from Moscow State University, with the main topics being the interconnection of physics and mathematics, preparing school students for universities, and modern technologies in education. Over three days, teachers and students from Nizhny Novgorod attended dozens of lectures and workshops discussing interdisciplinary connections, solving Olympiad problems, preparing for the Unified State Exam (USE), and artificial intelligence technologies in education. Special attention was given to fostering students' interest in the exact sciences — according to Moscow State University professors, the decisive role in this is played by the teacher, not the child's innate abilities. "I believe that the concept of an inclination towards physics or mathematics is overrated. A child's mind is a sponge that absorbs all knowledge. Children are curious. This is inherent in human nature. Therefore, when it is said about sixth or seventh graders, 'he is not a physicist, he is not a mathematician' — this is nonsense," says Alexey Seliverstov, a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov. The teachers also noted that difficulties with physics and mathematics often arise from gradually accumulating gaps in knowledge. When basic topics remain misunderstood, the subject begins to seem too complex to the student, and interest in it wanes. This is why it is important to engage children in the exact sciences as early as possible. "Some school students start to think about the fact that they do not understand physics and mathematics already in high school, and therefore they have significant problems with it. Mathematics and physics cannot be learned in a month or read like a literary work and quickly form an opinion. Each piece of knowledge is connected to the previous one," says Roman Ivanyushkin, a lecturer at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov. "Interest in physics in schools is fading, and it needs to be revived. One way is to start teaching physics earlier: in the fifth and sixth grades, when children still have genuine, lively interest, experiments can be conducted with them, and the laws of nature can be discussed. The teacher's task is to give the first impulse, to ignite a spark in their eyes," emphasizes Ignat Petrov, a leading physics teacher at school No. 548 in Moscow. The Oleg Deripaska Foundation "Free Business" conducts educational intensives for school teachers across the country, helping them engage students in the exact sciences and engineering professions. The foundation also assists regional schools in finding strong teachers, supports teachers with grants, and organizes ongoing training programs for them.
