More than 1600 sewer blockages have been eliminated in Nizhny Novgorod since the beginning of the year.

      March 31, 2026 17:41 Society Since the beginning of 2026, specialists from the Joint Utility Operator have eliminated over 1,600 household blockages in the external sewage networks of Nizhny Novgorod. This was reported by the press service of the city administration.

      Daily, the company's teams make between 10 to 30 trips for such requests and also conduct cleaning of the intake sections of the sewage pumping stations. The company services a total of 129 pumping stations, with specialists having to visit some facilities every day.

      During an inspection of the work at the pumping station in the Sormovo district, the head of the sewage management department, Mikhail Novokreshchenov, noted that many blockages could be avoided with proper use of the sewage system.

      "Toilet paper, wet wipes, pet litter – all of this does not dissolve in water and often leads to blockages in both indoor and outdoor sewage networks. Wet wipes are particularly dangerous: when they get into the working wheel of the pumping unit at the pumping station, the material heats up and turns into plastic, which leads to the failure of the pumping equipment," he emphasized.

      During the work, specialists cleaned the intake basket and pumping equipment of the station. More than ten buckets of household waste were extracted from the intake section – according to the staff, such a situation occurs regularly here.

      "Residents often do not think and throw inorganic waste into the toilet, which belongs in the trash bin, not in the sewage system. Such waste is the cause of blockages, equipment failures, flooding of sewage networks and basements, and the spillage of wastewater onto the surface," he added.

      The city administration reminded that wastewater from the sewage pumping stations is directed through collectors to the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station. Before complete treatment, over 400,000 cubic meters of wastewater daily enter the screening building, where about 10 tons of waste are extracted every day during the primary mechanical processing stage. An excessive amount of inorganic waste leads to overloads and equipment failures. Moreover, such waste does not participate in the biological treatment process provided by bacteria in the settling tanks and aeration tanks.

      The Nizhny Novgorod aeration station is the largest treatment facility in the region. For the first time since its commissioning in 1974, a large-scale modernization is taking place here. The work began in 2022 and is being carried out in stages without stopping the acceptance of wastewater. The first phase of reconstruction, which included 50 facilities, has already been completed. The second phase is currently being designed, which will cover another 61 facilities.
