At NNGASU, the ground subsidence on Zelensky Avenue was linked to active snowmelt.

March 28, 2026 10:50 Society The Nizhny Novgorod State Architectural and Construction University explained the reasons for the landslide that occurred on Zeleny Street in Nizhny Novgorod. According to specialists, the main factor was the intense melting of snow.

The day before, a landslide occurred in the area, which partially restricted traffic. Road services promptly began clearing the roadway and also started checking adjacent areas for the risk of repeated shifts. Work continued even at night.

The official representative of NNGASU, Ilya Reushkin, noted that natural slopes in Nizhny Novgorod, especially in areas with a developed ravine-hollow system, are traditionally prone to dangerous geological processes. Among them, landslides are the most common, creating difficulties for urban services and requiring significant efforts to eliminate the consequences.

He explained that the spring period is characterized by the natural activation of such processes. "Spring is the time when landslides begin to manifest more frequently due to temperatures crossing zero. The melting snow saturates the upper layers of the soil with moisture, leading to the formation of surface landslides—slumps. More dangerous, deep landslides can occur when snowmelt is combined with rain, when over-saturation affects not only the surface but also deeper layers," Reushkin said.

According to specialists, the landslide that occurred on Zeleny Street can be classified as a surface type. Most likely, it arose due to the rapid melting of snow on the slope that was most heated by the sun. As a result, the soil became over-saturated, leading to its displacement.

The architectural and construction university also noted that this year, the amount of precipitation significantly exceeded the norm, as confirmed by data from Rosgidromet, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and other agencies. This natural factor largely contributed to the incident and to some extent explains the situation.
