Two Nizhny Novgorod paddleboarders on the Oka were mistaken for drowning fishermen.
March 24, 2026 13:40 Incidents In Nizhny Novgorod, a witness mistook two people on the water for drifting fishermen and called emergency services. The city emergency rescue team was promptly dispatched to the scene.
According to the city hall, the concerned man called "112" and reported that he saw two people near the metro bridge who, in his opinion, were on thin, almost invisible ice and could be drowning.
From the Kanavinsky Bridge, it was visible that two people were drifting in the middle of the Oka River. From a distance, it was indeed difficult to discern whether they were swimming or in danger. The ice on the river had almost completely melted, and the residents of Nizhny Novgorod were on open water.
The arriving rescuers determined that no assistance was needed. The presumed fishermen turned out to be paddleboarders who decided to open the season earlier than usual and went out on the water.
️ "We remind you once again that going out on the ice is extremely dangerous right now and can end very sadly. Do not risk your life!" - noted the city hall.
It was previously reported that three men fell through the ice on the Volga near the Chkalov Stairs. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
