A new educational project dedicated to financial literacy has been launched in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
In the Nizhny Novgorod region, a joint project of the Ministry of Culture of the Nizhny Novgorod region and the Russian Society "Knowledge" has started, aimed at increasing the financial literacy of the younger generation. The initiative is being implemented with the support of the Volga-Vyatka Main Directorate of the Bank of Russia. The events align with the goals and objectives of the national project "Youth and Children." The project aims to teach the youth of the Nizhny Novgorod region responsible management of personal finances and protection against fraud. At the start of the project, urban model libraries will serve as the venues for its implementation, where everyone can access knowledge on how to manage their money wisely.
"Last year, Nizhny Novgorod became the Capital of Financial Culture. Our department supported the initiative of the regional Ministry of Finance — theatrical performances were created, such as the play by students of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional College of Culture 'Financial Puzzle,' which teaches schoolchildren and students how to recognize fraudulent actions and exit situations without losses. The year has ended, but the topic of financial literacy remains relevant. That is why we developed a joint program with the Russian Society 'Knowledge,' which we will test in the model libraries of Nizhny Novgorod. We often say that updated model-standard libraries become small houses of culture, ready to host events of various formats, and lectures will fit harmoniously into library plans. In the future, we plan to extend this initiative to municipalities," emphasized the Minister of Culture of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Natalia Sukhanova.
Among the project's tasks is to explain to schoolchildren and students how to properly plan expenses, save, and use credit. To achieve this, lectures, seminars, team intellectual games, and interactive classes will be organized. Participants can expect events dedicated to successful money management, the basics of financial literacy, as well as topics on benefits and tax deductions. To reinforce knowledge in a playful manner, quizzes "In the World of Finance" will be held.
"We have been collaborating with colleagues from the Ministry of Culture for several years: we provide educational materials to libraries, set up financial literacy corners — there are currently 18 in the region, and we also conduct training for librarians, including online. The cycle of lectures on relevant topics in the field of financial education is a logical continuation of our joint work. Each lecture is a concentrate of useful knowledge that can be easily applied in practice. We hope that this project will be scaled up in municipalities," noted Julia Serova, Deputy Head of the Volga-Vyatka Main Directorate of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation.
The main focus is on protection against financial fraud. Young people are taught how to safely use modern financial services and are informed about how not to fall for the tricks of fraudsters: what to do in case of suspicious calls, how to recognize phishing, and protect their money. For example, a lecture titled "Financial Fraud: Protection Strategies" is planned.
Lectures and interactive classes will take place at the Y.A. Adrianov Library in the Avtozavodsky District, at the F.M. Dostoevsky Central Library in the Kanavinsky District, at the A.S. Popov Library in the Prioksky District, at the Lenin Komsomol Library in the Sormovsky District, as well as at the "Family Reading Center" Library in the Lenin District.
The first event of the project took place on March 24 at the Y.A. Adrianov Library. The lecturer from the "Knowledge" society, director of the volunteer center of the youth policy department of Nizhny Novgorod State University named after N.I. Lobachevsky, and regional curator of the Association for the Development of Financial Literacy, Victoria Pigalina, told the students why conscious management of a personal budget goes beyond simply "getting by until payday," turning planning, saving, and investing into effective tools for achieving personal goals.
"My task is to provide listeners with not abstract knowledge, but concrete steps, so that everyone feels confident in any financial circumstances. It is practical skills that allow one to move from anxious waiting for 'what if something happens' to calm confidence: 'I know what to do with money today, and I understand how to act tomorrow to make my goals a reality,'" emphasized Victoria Pigalina.
During the lecture "Financial Literacy: Successful Money Management," the lecturer from the "Knowledge" society gave the audience three practical tips to get started. The first concerns tracking expenses: she recommended recording expenditures for a month using a notebook or notes on a phone to identify non-obvious expense items without imposing strict limits. The second tip is to apply the rule "pay yourself first," meaning that immediately after receiving income, one should set aside ten to twenty percent for savings, forming a financial cushion from priority allocations rather than from leftovers. The third tip relates to borrowing: before taking out a loan, one must calculate its total cost and honestly answer the question of the ability to repay in case of loss of income, as accumulating savings is a safer strategy than risking falling into debt dependency.
The next meetings with lecturers from the "Knowledge" society as part of the project will again take place at the Y.A. Adrianov Library. On March 25 at 11:00, a quiz "In the World of Finance" will be held here, and on March 26 at 11:00, a meeting with high school students "How to Become Financially Literate?" will take place. On April 1 at 14:00, a similar meeting with students will be held at the F.M. Dostoevsky Central Library, and on April 8 at 13:00, a meeting "Benefits and Tax Deductions: Everything You Need to Know" will take place at the A.S. Popov Library. On April 9, the lecture "Financial Literacy: Successful Money Management" will be held at 12:00 at the Lenin Komsomol Library, and on April 10 at 13:00 at the Family Reading Center in the Lenin District.
Let us remind you that the Russian Society "Knowledge" is an educational organization that annually holds hundreds of events for youth across Russia: it organizes thousands of presentations by outstanding individuals from the fields of culture, art, science, and history, conducts scientific competitions, contests, quizzes, produces films, and helps lecturers in our country to be heard and find their audience.
Since the reboot, the community of lecturers from the "Knowledge" society has united more than 30,000 people. They have conducted over 190,000 lectures in 89 regions of the Russian Federation. A total of 8,100 hours of educational content on various topics has been created: science, technology, space, culture and art, history, medicine, sports, and others. Online broadcasts from educational events of "Knowledge," as well as educational video content, have gathered over 2.3 billion views.
