The square of Academician Andrei Gaponov-Grekhov and the street of Hero of the Soviet Union Vorozheikin will appear in Nizhny Novgorod.

      On March 23, 2026, at a meeting of the City Duma of Nizhny Novgorod chaired by Evgeny Chintsov, the deputies approved decisions to assign names to elements of the street and road network and planning structure in the territory of Nizhny Novgorod. The square at the intersection of Ulyanova and Proviantskaya streets was named after Andrei Gaponov-Grekhov. The initiative to assign the name came from the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution "Federal Research Center Institute of Applied Physics named after Gaponov-Grekhov A.V. of the Russian Academy of Sciences." Andrei Viktorovich Gaponov-Grekhov is an outstanding Soviet and Russian physicist, a member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, the founder of the Institute of Applied Physics in Nizhny Novgorod, and an honorary citizen of the city. A new street in the area of prospective development in the Priokskiy district, located between the village of Olgino and the settlement of Luch, was named "Hero of the Soviet Union Vorozheikin Street." Arseniy Vasilyevich Vorozheikin is a major general of aviation, the first deputy commander of the air defense of the Black Sea Fleet of the USSR, a twice Hero of the Soviet Union, a holder of the Orders of Lenin and the Red Star, a four-time holder of the Order of the Red Banner, and a well-known writer. "Assigning the names of outstanding compatriots to new streets and squares is an important act of continuity between generations. The proposals were preliminarily reviewed and supported by the members of the Committee for the Commemoration of Outstanding Personalities and Historical Events. Andrei Gaponov-Grekhov is the pride of Nizhny Novgorod science, and Arseniy Vorozheikin is a defender of the Fatherland. I am confident that the residents and guests of Nizhny Novgorod will more often remember the people whose merits glorified our country and our city," noted Evgeny Chintsov. Additionally, in the village of Rzhavka in the Kstovo district of the urban district of Nizhny Novgorod, streets named Tisovaya, Terrasnaya, and Panoramaya will appear. One of the gardening non-profit partnerships in the city of Kstovo will be named "Nizhegorodets" at the request of the chairman.
