According to the press service of the regional Ministry of Internal Affairs, the tragedy occurred on February 8 at a controlled intersection of Sergei Akimov and Proletarskaya streets. A "Lada-Priora" driven by the 29-year-old man collided with a "Skoda Rapid." As a result of the accident, the 37-year-old driver of the foreign car was killed. After the incident, the perpetrator attempted to mislead the investigation. He claimed that he passed the intersection on a green traffic light and did not admit his guilt. However, police found witnesses to the accident. The witnesses confirmed that the sedan entered the intersection on a red light. One of them had a dashcam recording — it clearly shows the moment of the collision. An examination showed that the driver was under drugs. Moreover, he has been convicted three times for "drunk" driving and has repeatedly been held administratively liable. Medical professionals also established that the man is a regular drug user. After his arrest and the presentation of the collected evidence, he admitted his guilt. Criminal cases have been initiated against the driver under paragraph "a" of part 4 of article 264 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation and under part 2 of article 264.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Considering his criminal past, the investigator petitioned for his detention. The court supported this request — the man has been arrested. By law, he could face up to 12 years in prison.
