The area of green spaces in Nizhny Novgorod will increase by 40 hectares.
March 20, 2026 15:28 Society The area of green spaces for public use in Nizhny Novgorod will increase by 40 hectares. This was reported by Mayor Yuri Shalabaev on his Telegram channel. The head of the city reminded that there is a category of OTOP in the municipality - green spaces for public use. These zones have special status and are essentially inviolable green spaces. Currently, there are about 2,300 hectares of such areas in Nizhny Novgorod. It is prohibited to build on or reduce their area, and in the event of tree felling, the lost plantings must be compensated within the same boundaries. "The conclusion is simple and unequivocal: the more OTOP, the better for the city and its residents. There are no problems with this in Nizhny Novgorod, but considering two important factors: active construction and the merger with the Kstovo district, our task is not only to maintain the normative area of OTOP per resident of Nizhny Novgorod but also to increase this indicator," noted Shalabaev. By his order, the relevant departments of landscaping, as well as urban development and architecture, worked on the issue together with the regional ministry. As a result, at the preliminary stage, ten urban plots with a total area of 40 hectares were agreed upon. After the status change, they will become part of the green spaces for public use. In the near future, the departments will have to carry out extensive work related to adjusting the boundaries of urban OTOP and implementing the adopted decisions.
