      New rules for pregnancy management came into effect in 2026. The Ministry of Health approved an updated procedure for providing medical care in the specialty of "obstetrics and gynecology," which affected the work of women's clinics and the approach to supporting expectant mothers, reports Alexey Nikonov, editor-in-chief of "Stacionar-Press."

      One of the key changes concerns the timing of registration for antenatal care. If a woman sees a doctor at an early term, from the 4th to the 7th week, she must be registered no later than 14 days afterward. At later terms — within a maximum of one week.

      During pregnancy an expectant mother will have to speak with a medical psychologist at least twice. This approach is intended to help reduce anxiety and to identify emotional difficulties in a timely manner.

      Women's clinics received new tasks: they will now carry out screening examinations to assess reproductive health, organize patient education classes, and counsel women and families who are planning a child.

      Changes also affected pre‑abortion counseling. Women considering terminating a pregnancy will be shown the ultrasound image of the embryo and allowed to hear the heartbeat. The consultation will be conducted by a psychologist or a specially trained medical worker.

      In addition, non‑invasive prenatal testing is officially being introduced into practice — a maternal blood test that makes it possible to determine the risk of chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus without intervening in the pregnancy.
