      January 12, 2026 — in Nizhny Novgorod, at Ankudinovskaya Secondary School, the regional stage of the All-Russian School Olympiad (Vserossiyskaya Olimpiada Shkolnikov, VOSH) began. The first to demonstrate their knowledge in the subject of "Economics" were about 230 students studying in grades 9–11. A total of 3,500 young Nizhny Novgorod residents advanced to the regional stage of the All-Russian Olympiad this year.

      The opening ceremony of the regional stage of the Olympiad was attended by the Deputy Minister of Education and Science of the region, Maria Chernikova, and the Director of the Department of Education of the Nizhny Novgorod City Administration, Irina Boryakova.

      As the ministry reminded, the All-Russian School Olympiad includes four stages: school, municipal, regional and final. Thus, in this academic year more than 460,000 participants joined VOSH, which is 60,000 more than in the previous year.

      "The All-Russian School Olympiad plays a very important role in identifying talents and revealing students' potential. It is very important that the number of participants in the competition in our region increases every year: if last year the regional stage gathered more than 3,300 students, now this figure has reached 3,500. Every schoolchild should remember that participation in the Olympiad is valuable in itself: it is not only a test of their abilities, but also another step toward future professional success," noted Maria Chernikova.

      The regional stage of the Olympiad is conducted according to unified assignments developed by the central subject-methodological commissions of the Ministry of Education of Russia. In this academic year students in grades 9–11 will demonstrate their knowledge in 24 subjects.

      "A distinctive feature of holding the All-Russian School Olympiad this year was the division of the subject 'Informatics' into four separate profiles. This means that already at the school stage participants could showcase themselves in four directions at once: robotics, artificial intelligence, programming and information security. These are precisely the areas of informatics that are especially in demand in the modern Russian economy," emphasized Irina Zinovyeva, director of the regional center "Vega", which is the operator of the Olympiad in the region.

      Schoolchildren shared their experience of participating in the Olympiad.

      "I'm going to the Olympiad to win and to get a boost of positive energy, because any competition is, first of all, a valuable experience. I am especially fascinated by economics tasks that allow me to demonstrate my logic and analytical thinking. The most difficult exercises turn out to be those involving the construction of production possibility curves and the application of elements of game theory," said Anastasia Kazakova, a pupil of School No. 182 of Nizhny Novgorod.

      The regional stage of the All-Russian School Olympiad in the Nizhny Novgorod region will take place from January 12 to March 14, 2026, and will cover all general education subjects. The main venue for the competitions will be Ankudinovskaya Secondary School. Separate rounds in natural-science and technological directions will also be organized at the bases of the region's leading educational and scientific organizations — Nizhny Novgorod State University named after N. I. Lobachevsky (NNGU), PIMU, NGPU, NEYMARK University, School 21 "Sber" and other partner venues.

      Winners of the regional stage will have the opportunity to participate in the final stage of VOSH. Diplomas of winners and prize-winners of the final stage of the competition, valid for four years, grant the right to enter the country's leading universities without entrance exams in the corresponding specialty. Winners and prize-winners also receive the opportunity to take part in training and preparatory camps for the formation of Russia's national teams for participation in international olympiads.

      Recall that the All-Russian School Olympiad is held within the framework of the national project "Youth and Children", which is implemented on the instruction of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. The national project includes nine federal projects and programs: "Russia — a Country of Opportunities", "We Are Together", "Russia in the World", "All the Best for Children", "Leading Schools", "Teachers and Mentors", "Creating a Network of Modern Campuses", "Universities for a Generation of Leaders" and "Professionalitet".
