In Balakhna, a major renovation of the pediatric unit and the emergency department of the Central District Hospital has been completed.

      Major renovations were completed on the second and fourth floors of the pediatric building at the Balakhna Central District Hospital. The admissions area and the inpatient department for young patients have been updated, the regional government’s press service reported.

      The work was carried out under the national project "Longer and Active Life," in particular under the program for the modernization of primary healthcare. Over the past five years, more than 58 million rubles have been allocated to update the children's building.

      According to the Ministry of Health of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, the building's electrical supply was completely replaced, modern water heaters and double-glazed windows were installed. A major overhaul of the heating system was also carried out, with the installation of a heat energy metering unit. For the first time in decades, the cold and hot water supply systems, sewage and the fire water main were replaced. New fire hydrants were installed, and floors, walls and ceilings were finished.

      Acting chief physician of the Balakhna Central District Hospital, Oleg Chernov, recalled that the children's and adult polyclinics had previously been renovated, which positively affected the quality of outpatient care. He said the completion of the overhaul of the children's building was an important step toward creating a comfortable, modern and safe environment for treating children. He emphasized that now young patients and their parents receive care in conditions that meet high standards.

      Recall that in November 2025 the institution was visited on a working trip by Governor Gleb Nikitin. He was dissatisfied with the condition of the hospital and instructed the Ministry of Health to take measures to improve the situation — including staffing and increasing access to appointments with specialist doctors.

      After the regional head's visit, concrete steps were taken: an endocrinologist and an oncologist were hired by the hospital, outreach medical screenings were strengthened, and efforts were made to reduce accounts payable.

      The national project "Longer and Active Life" has been implemented in Russia since 2025 at the direction of President Vladimir Putin. It includes 11 federal areas, among them the fight against cardiovascular and oncological diseases, the development of medical rehabilitation, the improvement of emergency care and workforce training.

      Earlier it was reported that in 2025 about 330 healthcare facilities in the Nizhny Novgorod Region were renovated as part of the implementation of national projects.
