An investigation has been completed in Arzamas into a criminal case against a local resident who in February attempted to set fire to an administrative building. A police patrol stopped the assailant's actions, the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod region reported.

It is known that on the night of February 23 the man threw several bottles containing an incendiary mixture at a building on Lenin Street. As a result, the interior of the car he arrived in caught fire, but the building itself was not damaged.

Traffic police (GIBDD) and officers of the Arzamassky division of the Ministry of Internal Affairs were at the scene, where they were maintaining order in the city. The police quickly extinguished the blaze, preventing the fire from spreading.

The assailant was detained. He turned out to be a man born in 1975. A criminal case was opened against the suspect on a charge of attempting to commit a terrorist act. The court ordered his pretrial detention.

The investigation has collected a sufficient evidentiary base, and the case materials have been sent to court for substantive consideration. If the man's guilt is proven, he could face up to 20 years in prison.

It was previously reported that the Nizhny Novgorod resident faces up to 20 years in prison for intending to cause a gas explosion in a residential building.
