In the past 24 hours, 38,000 cubic meters of snow were removed from the streets of Nizhny Novgorod. City services, including DUKs, homeowners' associations (TSZh) and contractor organizations, are working around the clock to eliminate the effects of the anomalous snowfall caused by the snow cyclone "Francis". This was reported by the first deputy head of the Nizhny Novgorod administration, Anton Maksimov, after a morning tour of the city.
Maksimov said that more than a month's worth of precipitation — about 40 cm of snow — fell in the last two and a half days. Over the next two days the intensity of the snowfall will ease somewhat, but precipitation will continue. More than 1,300 units of specialized equipment and over 3,500 street cleaners and road workers are operating in intensified mode. Where possible, all capacities are being directed to snow removal.
Sergey Zaprudnov, deputy director for landscaping at the housing management company of the Nizhegorodsky district, said that work in the courtyards is carried out around the clock. The company has 10 of its own tractors that operate from early morning until late evening. Additional equipment is being hired, and currently 8 crews and 200 cleaners are involved. They not only clear the snow but immediately remove it from the adjacent residential areas. DUK employees are grateful to residents who help them cope with the aftermath of the snowfall.
Street cleaners note that the work is hard; they have to work almost without rest, but they are doing everything possible. Some residents ignore requests to move their cars, which complicates the work of those responsible.
Following the inspection, Anton Maksimov stressed that residents' requests are being monitored, and equipment and workers are promptly dispatched in response to calls. Most of the equipment is now occupied with clearing courtyards and removing snow. At night, specialized machinery will be deployed to treat the roads.
Anton Maksimov also appealed to motorists not to park along the roadway, since this slows down the work. Tow trucks will be used to speed up the process.
Earlier, Evgeny Tishkovets, a leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, reported that the height of snowdrifts in Central Russia has reached half a meter. In Nizhny Novgorod the snow cover measures 57 cm and will continue to grow.
The city's head, Yuri Shalabaev, held an emergency operations meeting because of the approaching anomalous snowfalls. The main task is to eliminate the consequences as quickly as possible.
