The tunnel-boring shield "Vladimir" has officially finished its work in Nizhny Novgorod. According to the Main Directorate, the huge 80-meter complex that was making way for new metro stations has begun to be taken apart.
Such dismantling is necessary to carry out defect inspection and replace worn parts. The first element detached from the 80-meter "train" was the cutterhead — the heaviest component, which also blocks access to the other units of the machine.
"The load weighs 54 tons. By the way, that's like 430 reindeer," report the Main Directorate for the Construction and Repair of the Metro, Bridges and Road Networks in the city of Nizhny Novgorod.
Specialists will need to study the condition of the structures after prolonged underground work, check the tightness of seals and ensure the waterproofing of the lining of the completed second tunnel. Such preventive maintenance is a mandatory stage after completion of tunneling. The owner will decide the further fate of the equipment and its spare parts after all inspections are completed.
