In Nizhny Novgorod, the ice cover on bodies of water is currently extremely unstable and poses a serious threat to people’s lives. This is warned by the Nizhny Novgorod Civil Defense and Emergency Situations Department.
It is especially important for parents whose children play near bodies of water to be vigilant. Mikhail Baranov, director of the Nizhny Novgorod Civil Defense and Emergency Situations Department, emphasized that winter fishing enthusiasts, in their pursuit of a dubious catch, put their lives at great risk. At present the ice is at its thinnest and its surface is uneven, especially in areas with fast currents. He also noted that any venture onto the ice can be fatal, especially for children. Any games on the ice can lead to tragedy, so parents must constantly watch their children.
The Civil Defense and Emergency Situations Department reminded of the main rules for safe behavior on the ice:
- Before going onto the ice, make sure it is safe.
- Use established paths. If there are none, plan your route from the shore, take a sturdy long pole with you, and avoid suspicious areas.
- If signs of unstable ice appear, such as cracking, sagging, or water on the surface, immediately return to shore. Move with your legs spread wide, keeping them in contact with the ice, or crawl if necessary.
- Do not allow groups of people or heavy loads to gather in one spot on the ice.
- Avoid going onto the ice in bad weather: fog, snowfall, rain, or at night.
- Stay away from rapids, open water holes (polynyas), ice holes, and ice edges. If you are not sure it is safe, it is better to go around the dangerous area along the shore.
If you witness an accident on a body of water or find yourself in such a situation and can report the incident, call 101, 112 or 268-11-00 immediately.
