A unique liver transplant was performed in Nizhny Novgorod.

      09 January 2026 15:32 Society — In Nizhny Novgorod, a unique medical operation was successfully performed: a liver transplant with simultaneous removal of a stomach tumor. This procedure was a rare event even at the international level, said Alexey Nikonov, editor-in-chief of the medical news agency "Stacionar-Press."

      The operation lasted more than eight hours and required the coordinated work of a team of highly qualified doctors. Specialists saved the life of a 37-year-old father of three who had been diagnosed with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor with multiple metastases to the liver.

      The patient was admitted to the hospital in extremely serious condition with total involvement of the organ, severe pain and signs of systemic toxicity. Standard treatment methods proved ineffective, and the only chance for recovery was a liver transplant combined with the simultaneous removal of the malignant tumor.

      The operation was successful. The transplanted organ is functioning normally and the tumor has not recurred. The patient has already returned to work but continues to be monitored by specialists and to undergo anticancer therapy.
