A resident of the Kanavinsky district of Nizhny Novgorod fell victim to fraudsters, losing a large sum of money after corresponding with scammers in a messenger app, the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the region reported.

A 59-year-old pensioner filed a report with Police Department No. 5 alleging theft of funds. According to her, for two weeks she had been communicating with a person who introduced himself as an employee of the management company. He said that the intercom in her building was due to be replaced, and that to receive new keys she needed to provide the code from an SMS message.

Not suspecting anything, the woman gave the code. Some time later she was contacted by another unknown person who introduced himself as a law enforcement officer. He said that a power of attorney had allegedly been issued in her name and that fraudsters were trying to seize her money. To protect the funds he advised transferring all her savings to a "safe" account.

Trusting the fake policeman, the pensioner transferred 785,000 rubles via an ATM in the Nizhegorodsky district of the city. Later she realized she had been defrauded and went to the police.

Investigators have opened a criminal case on fraud. All the circumstances of the incident are currently being established.

Earlier it was reported that scammers had deceived a Nizhny Novgorod resident in the sale of a fake phone.
