Doctors removed a fungus from the nose of a Nizhny Novgorod cheesemaker.
06 January 2026, 12:34 — Society. In Nizhny Novgorod, a man engaged in the production of blue-mold cheese required surgical intervention after being diagnosed with a fungal infection of the nasal sinuses. This was reported by Alexey Nikonov, editor-in-chief of MIA "Statsionar-press".
The patient suggested that his professional activity was the cause. He believes that inhaling spores of the mold used in cheesemaking could have triggered the infection.
However, ENT surgeon Grigory Belozerov, who performed the operation, disagreed with that version. According to him, the mold formations found in the nose are not related to the noble mold used in cheese production.
During the procedure the doctor removed a significant amount of pus, fungal masses and polyps from the sinuses.
"Scientific sources say that it is practically impossible to 'inhale' mold from cheese. Most likely the cause of the fungus is a prolonged allergy and the absence of adequate treatment," Belozerov explained.
Although medical literature describes the so-called "cheesemaker's" condition, in which the respiratory organs are affected by fungus, it is most often the lungs, not the sinuses, that are affected.
Earlier it was reported that well-known sambist Vyacheslav Kochugov underwent a major knee operation at one of Nizhny Novgorod's clinics.
