In 2025 more than 7,000 new surveillance cameras were launched in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The regional "Unified Center for Storage and Processing of Video Information" now operates over 25,000 devices, which is 33% more than a year ago.
More than 7,500 cameras are installed in apartment buildings: they monitor what happens in building entrances, elevators and are built into intercoms. The rest are cameras integrated with other digital systems. They can be found at "smart" stops, in areas with large crowds, at transport hubs and other urban infrastructure sites.
As the region's Minister of Digital Development and Communications Alexander Sinelobov said, over the past three years the video surveillance system has helped significantly reduce the level of street crime. The cameras can recognize vehicle license plates, detect crowds, find forgotten items and even use biometrics to establish identity.
In addition, cameras installed in residential buildings are equipped with video analytics based on artificial intelligence. This technology allows faces captured on video to be recognized. According to specialists, the probability of locating the needed object in the system exceeds 90%.
Street cameras can count the number of people at stops and monitor how full garbage containers are. This helps city services respond to situations more quickly.
Special attention is paid to the "Digital City Policeman" project, which is already operating in Nizhny Novgorod. It monitors order in parks, squares and other public places. The system recognizes smoking in prohibited areas, walking dogs where it is forbidden, and even registers scooter entry into park zones. If someone violates the rules, the system can warn them via loudspeaker.
The development of such digital solutions is part of the national project "Data Economy and Digital Transformation of the State", launched at the instruction of President Vladimir Putin.
Earlier it was reported that 155 surveillance cameras were installed on the territory of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin.
