As of January 1, 2026, tokens are officially no longer accepted in the Nizhny Novgorod metro. This decision is enshrined in a decree of the government of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast dated August 5, 2025, which amended the existing rules for travel documents, reports the municipal enterprise "Nizhny Novgorod Metro."
Head of Nizhny Novgorod Yuri Shalabaev recalled that the move away from tokens had long been overdue. According to him, in recent years they were hardly used to pay for travel and were more often bought as souvenirs. Of the three million tokens issued, about a thousand remain in circulation today. The mayor admitted that he himself had purchased several as keepsakes.
Yuri Shalabaev also recalled an interesting fact from the metro's history: the hole in the center of the Nizhny Novgorod token was not accidental. It was devised by metro employees to stop the mass transfer of tokens to Saint Petersburg, where fares were higher and the tokens matched in weight.
From 2026, metro travel can only be paid for by modern methods – bank and transport cards, tickets with QR codes, and also by biometrics. Tokens will finally become part of the city's history.
