Residents of the Nizhny Novgorod region will miss the Quadrantids meteor shower.

The first meteor shower of 2026 will reach its peak activity on the night of January 4. However, residents of the Nizhny Novgorod region are unlikely to be able to observe this astronomical event.
According to the Grechko Nizhny Novgorod Planetarium, several interesting events are expected in the sky in early January. On January 3 the Moon will come close to the planet Jupiter, and the next day it will pass near the open star cluster Praesepe in the constellation Cancer.
The peak activity of the Quadrantids meteor shower is forecast for the night of January 4. Its radiant is located in the constellation Boötes. These meteors have relatively low speeds but are still quite noticeable, and the shower is rich in bright meteors and fireballs.
The Quadrantids’ radiant is above the horizon throughout the night, but the peak lasts only a short time — just a few hours. This is because the stream is a narrow band of particles that the Earth crosses at almost a right angle.
Under ideal conditions during the peak one could see from 40 to 120 meteors per hour. The greatest activity is expected at about 2:00 a.m. Moscow time.
Nevertheless, for residents of Nizhny Novgorod and the surrounding region observing the meteor shower will be almost impossible. A heavy snowfall that began the previous night has brought dense cloud cover and heavy precipitation, which will completely obscure the night sky and prevent seeing the meteors.
It should be recalled that in 2026 Russians will see several solar and lunar eclipses.
It was also reported that a strong geomagnetic storm is expected on January 3.
