Every year thin ice causes tragedies. Most often the victims are children left unsupervised near bodies of water and fishermen who go out onto weak ice. The Office for Civil Defense, Emergency Situations and Fire Safety of the Nizhny Novgorod Region reminded residents of the region about the rules for safe behavior on the ice.

According to rescuers, to avoid disaster you must remember that the safe ice thickness for one person is at least 7 cm. An ice rink requires at least 12 cm, a pedestrian crossing — 15 cm, and vehicle passage — at least 30 cm.

It is strictly forbidden to go out on the ice while intoxicated, to run or jump on it, to gather in large groups in one place, and to go out onto ice on rivers with a strong current.

If you fall through the ice, the main thing is not to panic and not to make sudden movements. You should spread your arms wide, grab the edge of the ice and try to get out by crawling onto it chest-first. After that, you should crawl back toward the direction you came from, because the ice there has already been checked for strength.

If you witness an incident, you must act quickly but cautiously. To rescue a person use long objects — a stick, board, pole or rope. When crawling toward the hole in the ice, spread your arms wide and loudly tell the victim that you are coming to help.

The victim should be taken to a warm place, have wet clothing removed, have their body rubbed, and be given hot tea. Giving alcohol is strictly prohibited — it can end in a fatal outcome. Be sure to call an ambulance at 112.

The office added that inspectors from the GIMS Center of the EMERCOM of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region, together with other agencies, will carry out raids and patrols of ice crossings and bodies of water.

Earlier Nizhny Novgorod residents were reminded of the rules for proper riding on "snow tubes."
