A strong geomagnetic storm will hit Nizhny Novgorod on January 3.
02 January 2026 12:29 Society During the New Year holidays, the Sun produced a powerful M7.1-class flare. This was reported by 360.ru, citing the press service of the Laboratory for Solar Astronomy of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The ejection occurred at the moment when the chimes were sounding in the Far East regions. As specialists explained, the flare caused the Sun to eject a large cloud of superheated plasma. Part of this mass is moving toward Earth, which may affect the planet's magnetic field.
According to scientists' calculations, the geomagnetic disturbance will reach Earth on the night of January 2–3 and will be the first noticeable geomagnetic storm of the year. Its intensity, forecasts say, may reach G2. At the same time, the probability that the storm will intensify to G3 or higher is about 30%.
Experts emphasized that, overall, the geomagnetic situation during the New Year holidays will remain favorable. However, short-lived disturbances are possible in the first days of January. The situation could change if new flares occur on the Sun.
In addition, according to the portal my-calend.ru, the strength of the magnetic storm will reach 6 points on the night and morning of January 3. Earlier it was reported that on the evening of January 2 Nizhny Novgorod residents could expect a geomagnetic storm of 5 points. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
