The Nizhny Novgorod Museum-Reserve and the N.I. Lobachevsky National Research Nizhny Novgorod State University have completed a large-scale joint educational program implemented under the aegis of the Russian Historical Society. As part of the project, 285 first-year students of N.I. Lobachevsky NNSU visited the museum’s key exhibitions using the "Pushkin Card". This was reported by the Ministry of Culture of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
The program, aimed at visualizing and interpreting historical heritage, became an important supplement to the compulsory course "Foundations of Russian Statehood." First-year students from the Institute of International Relations and World History and the Institute of Biology and Biomedicine made two guided visits each to branches of the Nizhny Novgorod Museum-Reserve, where they were able to see authentic museum items and unique exhibitions demonstrating the achievements of Russian statehood.
"The program proved its effectiveness, allowing students not just to study history from textbooks but to immerse themselves in its material evidence. This is an invaluable experience that enriched the course 'Foundations of Russian Statehood' and showed how vividly and tangibly the region’s historical heritage can be presented. We see how the 'Pushkin Card' is becoming a powerful tool for such education," said Mikhail Rykhtik, co-chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the Russian Historical Society and director of the Institute of International Relations and World History at N.I. Lobachevsky NNSU.
The first block of excursions took place at the Rukavishnikov Estate, where students learned about the architectural style of 19th-century academic eclecticism, the lifestyle of Nizhny Novgorod merchants, and the history of the famous dynasty that left a significant mark on Russian history.
The second block was devoted to the exhibition "The Feat of National Unity" in the Ivanovskaya Tower of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. Here, along the route of the 1612 people's militia, students were able to understand the complexities of the Time of Troubles, follow the course of events using a multimedia map, and note the decisive role of Nizhny Novgorod residents in the liberation of Moscow. Participants studied the specifics of 17th-century warriors' weaponry and saw how the city looked in that era on a detailed model of the Kremlin.
Cooperation between the Nizhny Novgorod Museum-Reserve and Nizhny Novgorod University is not limited to excursion programs. As part of the long-term partnership, student internships will continue. In the summer of 2026, first-year students will have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice by joining the museum’s archaeological expedition. This will allow them to take part in field research, gain valuable experience working with historical artifacts, and contribute to the study of the region’s past.
"This joint program has become a vivid example of the successful integration of academic education and museum practice. We are pleased that our exhibitions truly served as a living laboratory of history for first-year students, effectively helping them comprehend the formation of Russian statehood and their role in its preservation. We will continue to develop such initiatives so that the museum remains a key tool for educating and enlightening the younger generation," said Yuri Filippov, general director of the Nizhny Novgorod Museum-Reserve and co-chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the Russian Historical Society.
The program confirmed the potential for cooperation between the region’s leading educational and cultural institutions in the historical education of youth, so the project will continue its work in 2026.
Recall that the "Pushkin Card" operates within the national project "Family." In 2026, the bank-operator servicing the "Pushkin Card" changed in all regions of Russia.
