From 12 January 2026 all residents of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast will be able to bring in their fir and pine trees purchased from forestry offices for recycling so they do not end up in landfill.

According to the regional Ministry of Forestry, the campaign is open to all residents of the region who bought a fir or pine from a forestry office under an official purchase agreement. To hand in a tree it is sufficient to present that document at any nearby forestry office — regardless of where it was purchased.

The aim of the campaign is to prevent holiday trees from being thrown into rubbish containers or sent to municipal solid waste landfills. Instead, they will be recycled in ways that benefit the environment.

Collected trees will be disposed of in two ways. Some will be burned in boiler houses and forest firefighting stations in compliance with all environmental standards. The rest will be processed into wood chips, which will then be used to produce mulch, compost or other types of raw materials.

According to the ministry, the region’s forestry offices prepared 4,030 coniferous trees for the New Year holidays this season.

Collection points have been organized at all district forestry offices in the oblast. An up-to-date list of addresses and contact phone numbers is posted on the website of the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast Ministry of Forestry.

Earlier it was reported how much live fir trees and Christmas tree bouquets cost at the markets.
