Doctors at the ambulance station reminded Nizhny Novgorod residents about dangerous winter activities.
The most traumatic is the launching of fireworks.
Specialists from the Nizhny Novgorod Emergency Medical Service station remind everyone that setting off fireworks can be very dangerous. The information was released by the press service of the government of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
“Setting off fireworks is one of the most injurious New Year’s entertainments. First of all, you must not trust the launching of rockets to people who are intoxicated. Children should not be allowed near firecrackers or even sparklers without adult supervision. When buying fireworks, it’s not a bad idea to ask the seller for a certificate and a license confirming the product’s quality and safety. The mildest thing you can expect from counterfeits is that they simply may not go off. Much worse is if a firecracker or rocket explodes in your hands prematurely,” said Roman Pegov, chief physician of the Nizhny Novgorod EMS station.
If a rocket fails to go off, it’s better not to try to check what went wrong immediately, but to wait a little while. And if a person receives a burn while setting off a firecracker, you should apply cold to the skin as soon as possible — snow or ice — or place the injured area under a stream of cold water. Ice compresses should be applied for at least 15 minutes. If the burn covers a large area or involves the face, you should call an ambulance immediately.
If flames get onto clothing made of synthetic fabric, under no circumstances should you try to tear the fabric off, because it will come off together with the skin. Before a doctor examines the burn, it’s better not to apply any ointments or substances: it is enough to simply cover the wounds with a sterile dressing or bandage.
Medical workers also remind residents of Nizhny Novgorod what to do if someone is hit in the eye with a snowball.
“Apply cold immediately; this will reduce swelling. After that, it won’t hurt for the patient to be examined by an ophthalmologist. Be sure to see a doctor if clouding, glare, iridescent spots, or other consequences of an eye injury appear,” advised the medics.
Deputy chief physician Ksenia Pinogorova added that caution should be exercised during any winter fun, including sledding.
“Sledding is another of the most dangerous amusements. The result can be not only bruises but also spinal fractures — according to statistics, this is one of the most frequent injuries people sustain in winter. The main symptom of a spinal fracture is an inability to breathe normally. After an incorrect landing a person cannot inhale or exhale properly. With injury to the lower vertebrae of the thoracic region, pain appears between the shoulder blades. Pain may not appear immediately but after some time. The sooner medical care is provided, the better,” explained Ksenia Pinogorova.
Tubing is another popular winter pastime. Traumatologists advise doing it only on specially prepared tracks, avoiding collisions with other people, observing the order of turns and keeping a safe distance. In addition, you should not get into a tube with someone else.
“If someone hits their head on the ice rink or an icy slope, the severity of the injury should be assessed by the symptoms. In the case of loss of consciousness, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, or a sudden desire to sleep or nap, you must urgently call an ambulance. A sprain will cause swelling. The injured person should be laid down, given a figure-eight bandage, and cold applied to the painful area. With a dislocation of a hand or foot joint, the first rule is to immobilize the limb and not load it. Next, apply a cold compress or ice, then make a pressure bandage and wrap with an elastic bandage. In the case of a fracture, the arm or leg should be supported by rolls made from rolled blankets or towels and kept immobile until the doctor arrives. Do not touch open fractures — simply cover the area with clean cloth and wait for the doctor,” recommended the physician.
