More than 450 tonnes of tires were sent for recycling in Nizhny Novgorod in 2025, exceeding last year’s result. This was reported by the city Department of Improvement.
The project to collect used tires has been running for the fifth year. Its main goal is to gather old car tires and send them for recycling. The organizers are the MEGA shopping center together with the administration of Nizhny Novgorod. Residents of Nizhny Novgorod can take part — bringing their unused tires, after which they are sent to a recycling plant and later used, for example, as surfacing for sports grounds.
First Deputy Director of the Department of Improvement Alexey Krasnov believes that social partnership between business and the administration has great potential: “Business sees the need for cooperation and assistance from state and municipal authorities in implementing environmental policy and does not stand aside. Environmental issues are complex, and solving them alone would be difficult and inefficient. By joining forces, we support each other’s efforts and carry out our own projects, which leads to results.” He also noted that the campaign will run until December 31.
As is known, tires can harm the environment. Similar initiatives based on the principles of reasonable consumption help avoid the negative consequences of their accumulation.
“Our team always takes on initiatives that are useful and eco-friendly with great interest. We actively work with our partners — local communities and authorities. Moreover, the popularity of our eco-station, as well as the active stance of caring Nizhny Novgorod residents on waste recycling issues, encourages us to pursue new ambitious environmental projects,” said Olga Budanova, Managing Director of the shopping center, noting that more than 80 tonnes of tires were collected at the mall’s site in 2025, compared with about 40 tonnes last year.
The environmental initiative received particular support from Nizhny Novgorod residents who work in the automotive sector. Andrey Dyatlov regularly brings tires for recycling from his tire service: “I come here often because tires always pile up at our place. A civilized process of collection and disposal is much better than just throwing them into ordinary trash bins. In my view, this project should continue and even more such collection points should be created.”
Earlier, the Department of Improvement of the Nizhny Novgorod administration emphasized that this kind of campaign has been carried out for more than one year. “By order of the city head Yuri Shalabayev, we regularly explore expanding the number of events that increase environmental literacy and educate our residents. All so that waste ends up at landfills and disposal sites or goes to secondary recycling, and does not pollute streets and forests. All tires collected in this campaign will be handed over to a plant that specializes in the disposal of rubber waste. After processing, the resulting secondary raw material — rubber crumb — will be used to create eco-friendly and safe surfaces for the city’s playgrounds and sports grounds,” said Department Director Elena Pegova.
