A dermatologist from Nizhny Novgorod explained why the "superfungus" from Europe is dangerous.

A new aggressive fungal infection — Trichophyton indotineae — is spreading in Europe. This so‑called "superfungus" is resistant to most known drugs and causes severe forms of tinea (ringworm) with itchy, long non‑healing patches on the face, trunk and groin area.
Nizhny Novgorod dermatologist Tatyana Pavlova, head of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the State Research Center for Dermatovenerology and Cosmetology of the Ministry of Health of Russia, spoke about the risks associated with this infection and ways to protect oneself. Her comment was published on the Telegram channel by the chief editor of MIA "Stacionar‑press," Aleksey Nikonov.
According to Varenova, Trichophyton indotineae often provokes chronic relapses and is practically unresponsive to standard treatment. The problem is exacerbated by diagnostic errors and the uncontrolled use of steroid ointments.
The expert recommends seeing a dermatologist immediately for rashes that do not heal, rapidly increase in size, or look unusual. If ordinary methods do not help, a laboratory skin scraping is necessary — based on its results the doctor can select a more effective individualized therapy.
Simple preventive measures help avoid infection: regularly change towels, linens and clothing, do not use other people's personal items, and wash at high temperatures.
A special warning — do not use steroid creams without a doctor's prescription. These products can only mask symptoms and accelerate the spread of the fungus.
