The regional student adaptive sports festival took place in Nizhny Novgorod on November 26.
More than 200 students from Nizhny Novgorod universities and colleges, as well as representatives of five teams from the All‑Russian Society of Disabled People, took part in the event organized by the National Research University "Presidential Academy" with the support of the regional Ministry of Sports.
The Minister of Sports of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Dmitry Kabaylo, emphasized the importance of such events: "The development of student and adaptive sports is one of the priority areas of our work. We are systematically creating accessible infrastructure, holding competitions, and cooperating with universities and vocational colleges."
The minister stressed that the festival gives students with disabilities the opportunity to develop their physical abilities and feel part of the sporting community.
Participants competed in seven adaptive disciplines: sitting volleyball, table tennis, showdown, darts, powerlifting, arm wrestling, and indoor orienteering. Tabletop sports were also presented — cornhole, Japanese billiards, jakkolo and Matryoshka.
Tatyana Piskunova, Deputy Director of the Nizhny Novgorod Institute of Management, noted that the festival has been held for the fourth year in a row and continues to develop.
As a result of the festival, 120 people became winners and prize‑winners in team and individual competitions.
Vyacheslav Orinchuk, Head of the Department of Physical Education at the National Research University "Presidential Academy," reported that adaptive sports are being consistently developed at the university.
"We have had such a club at our academy since the 1990s — a sports section for tabletop sports. About 20–30 people with disabilities attend the section. We also have an athletic gymnastics division. Students with disabilities go to the gym and train with fairly heavy weights. We want to show that sport is available to anyone who wants it. In my opinion, every student should engage in physical activity, and they can choose which type themselves," the department head shared.
In addition, a separate festival for schoolchildren is held every spring. Last year about 120 people took part.
