In the Nizhny Novgorod region, results were summed up regarding the situation with medical personnel. At an expanded board meeting of the regional Ministry of Health, which took place in the renovated conference hall of the regional children's hospital, they announced which specialists are especially needed and which are currently more numerous than required.
As Alexey Nikonov, editor-in-chief of MIA "Stacionar-Press," reported, the analysis was conducted taking into account private medical organizations operating within the compulsory health insurance (OMS) system, under the state guarantees program for providing free medical care.
There are currently 53,922 people employed in the region's public healthcare system. About 10,000 of them are physicians, i.e., less than 19% of the total. The largest group is feldshers and nurses (22,460 people), and administrative and technical staff — economists, HR specialists and IT specialists — number 17,143 people.
There is still an acute shortage of district therapists, psychiatrists, oncologists, anesthesiologist-resuscitators and emergency doctors. However, there are even more dentists, pediatricians (non-district), obstetrician-gynecologists, neurologists, urologists and cardiovascular surgeons in the region than needed.
To attract more specialists to the region, in 2025 the regional budget allocated 20.35 million rubles to compensate housing rent for medical workers from other cities. Doctors also receive service housing: to date 17 apartments have been provided, another 31 under social tenancy agreements, and 29 places in dormitories.
It was previously reported that the Ministry of Health set mandatory mentorship periods for graduates of Nizhny Novgorod medical universities and colleges.
