Nizhny Novgorod police detained members of three interregional organized crime groups.

      At the end of November of this year, officers of the 6th Department of the Criminal Investigation Directorate, in cooperation with the Economic Security and Anti-Corruption Department, the OPB, the BSTМ of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region, the Investigative Committee of Russia for the region, OMON and SOBR of the National Guard of the Russian Federation, suppressed the illegal activities of three interregional organized criminal groups that specialized in fraudulent actions aimed at stealing payments from servicemen serving in the zone of the special military operation and alienating their property.

      Preliminary findings indicate that from 2024 to 2025 the suspects were engaged in searching for and selecting persons who led an asocial lifestyle and abused alcohol, with the aim of inducing them to sign contracts with the Ministry of Defense to receive lump-sum and other payments. Then, with those individuals, a participant of the criminal group concluded a sham marriage, and the recruits were sent to the SVO zone after giving their spouses access to their accounts.

      The sham wives withdrew part of the money on the accounts in cash, transferred part to affiliated accounts, and then the funds were distributed among the accomplices. The amount of embezzled funds exceeds 4 million rubles.

      Also, during operational-search and investigative activities, law enforcement officers established that one of the group members in August 2024 persuaded an acquaintance who abused alcohol to sell his share in an apartment, and appropriated the proceeds. This victim was also involved in the scheme to illegally obtain payments intended for SVO participants. Before departing for the special operation zone, the man entered into a sham marriage with one of the fraudsters’ accomplices. The perpetrator, believing that after appropriating the money from the sale of the property the acquaintance might report the fraud to the police, arranged for the victim to obtain an alcohol-containing liquid, after consuming which the man and four of his friends died of poisoning.

      Criminal cases have been opened in the Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region under part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (fraud). Charges have been brought against eight residents of the region and against a man accused of murder motivated by mercenary reasons by a method dangerous to the public of two or more persons (subparagraphs “a,” “e,” “zh,” “z,” “k” of part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).

      The court has imposed measures of restraint on the offenders in the form of pre-trial detention and house arrest. The investigation continues. A set of necessary investigative actions is being carried out aimed at documenting the criminal activities of the suspects in the criminal case.

      In accordance with the law, for committing such crimes a penalty of imprisonment for up to ten years and a fine of up to one million rubles is provided.
