Nizhny Novgorod utility workers go out to clear blockages up to 30 times a day.

      Since the beginning of 2025, specialists in Nizhny Novgorod have cleared nearly five thousand blockages in the external sewer networks, the press service of JSC "United Communal Operator" reported.

      In just 10 months, the company's emergency and technical services made more than 9,000 call-outs to clear blockages in various districts of the city. On average, over 30 such operations are carried out citywide each day.

      As explained by "OKO", one of the key causes of blockages remains the improper use of the sewer system. In particular, personal hygiene products, wet wipes, toilet paper and other foreign objects regularly end up in it. These wastes form dense masses that block the flow of wastewater and put pumping equipment out of service.

      On November 25, planned maintenance was carried out at the sewage pumping station located in the Krasnaya Polyana residential complex. According to company employees, between 100 and 150 kg of garbage that has entered the drainage system is removed from this residential complex every day.

      Overall, specialists estimate that between 13 and 20 tons of garbage enter the city's sewage networks daily. This leads to serious consequences: equipment shutdowns, the need for manual cleaning and the deployment of specialized machinery.

      Residents of Nizhny Novgorod are urged to treat communal infrastructure with care and not to throw household waste into the sewer system. Violating these recommendations can lead to apartments and basements being flooded, the formation of external blockages, breakdowns of pumping stations and even streets being flooded with wastewater.

      Earlier, students of Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University who were causing blockages in toilets were threatened with expulsion.

      An environmentalist also explained how microplastics from the sewage system harm the environment.
