8% of Nizhny Novgorod residents plan to learn Chinese in 2026.

Residents of Nizhny Novgorod are showing increased interest in learning foreign languages, and Chinese is appearing in their plans more often. According to a survey by Avito Services, 8% of Nizhny Novgorod respondents plan to start studying Chinese in 2026.
English remains the most common foreign language among Nizhny Novgorod residents, with 56% of respondents already possessing basic knowledge. Fifteen percent know German, and 4% know French. Thirty-five percent of study participants admitted that they only know their native language — Russian.
Most often Nizhny Novgorod residents learn foreign languages at school (35%), but more people are choosing online courses and apps — 27%. Individual lessons were preferred by 24%, group lessons by 18%. Another 17% learned languages by watching films and TV series in the original language.
In 2026, 21% of respondents plan to brush up on their English, and 8% to start learning Chinese. These two languages are considered the most promising over the next five years by 73% and 69% respectively.
French was called promising by 10% of respondents, Arabic and Spanish by 9% each.
Notably, 78% of Nizhny Novgorod residents are confident that children definitely need languages. Moreover, many believe it is better to start as early as possible — in kindergarten and primary school.
Also, 64% of respondents are convinced that knowing at least one foreign language contributes to career advancement. A further 36% believe it is difficult to remain competitive without it, and 27% note that a language provides a tangible advantage in the labor market.
