      On November 19, as part of the XIX International Forum and Exhibition “Transport of Russia,” Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Andrey Nikitin, together with the head of the Federal Road Agency Roman Novikov, by videoconference launched traffic on the upgraded and expanded to four lanes section of the federal highway R-158 Nizhny Novgorod—Saratov in the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

      On behalf of all road workers, the head of the Federal Road Agency thanked the Government of the Russian Federation for the enormous support of key infrastructure projects.

      “I want to thank the Government, the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation for their attention and assistance in carrying out major repairs on such important roads for the country as the R-158 Nizhny Novgorod—Saratov. As early as 2022, by order of the Government of the Russian Federation, road workers began large-scale modernization of this federal route and its conversion to a four-lane configuration. One of the key stages of this work was the capital repair of the section opened today from the 77th to the 104th km in the Arzamas urban district, which was carried out from 2024 to 2025. We will continue to develop this direction. In 2027 we expect to complete the expansion of the R-158 road to four lanes along the entire stretch from Nizhny Novgorod to Arzamas,” said Roman Novikov.

      Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Sergey Morozov emphasized the importance of the project for the region.

      “The major repair of a very important section of road for our region has been completed — the road that connects Nizhny Novgorod with the M-12 highway and further with the third most populous city in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Arzamas. I am confident that the completion of the modernization of this section of the federal R-158 highway will give a boost to both the tourism and logistics potential of our region. Thanks to the work carried out by colleagues from Rosavtodor — and I remind you that the major repair of the road was carried out without a complete closure of traffic — today we have a modern highway. It is symbolic that we open the renovated road on the eve of Transport Workers’ Day. Safe and high-quality roads are the best gift for the professional holiday,” emphasized Sergey Morozov.

      In less than two years, road workers converted 23 km of carriageway to a four-lane configuration. As part of the major repair on the section, they replaced the pavement structure and laid a new surface of wear-resistant stone-mastic asphalt concrete with polymer-bitumen binders, which is used on roads with high traffic intensity (in peak periods 15–20 thousand vehicles pass here per day).

      “With the active assistance of the regional government and personally the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Gleb Nikitin, and with the maximum involvement of local authorities, in under two years we were able to radically transform 23 kilometers of the route. The major repair was carried out under difficult conditions on an active road and without stopping traffic. The road workers coped excellently with all tasks set. I would like to note separately that continuous median and side barrier guardrails have been installed along the entire length of the project. This measure will prevent vehicles from entering oncoming lanes and from leaving the roadway, which will help reduce the risk of accidents with serious consequences. The total length of the protective structures amounted to about 65 kilometers,” said the acting head of the Federal State Institution Uprdor Moscow—Nizhny Novgorod Dmitry Glushkov.

      Five at-grade interchanges were constructed on the section for U-turn maneuvers and changes in travel direction. Their main task is to eliminate accident hotspots and ensure transport accessibility of settlements located near the road. U-turn loops were added at the 79th km near Rozhdestvensky Square, the 85th km near Kriush, the 88th km and 91st km in the area of Volchikhinsky Square, and at the 104th km at the turn to Arzamas.

      At 11 junctions with local roads, acceleration-deceleration lanes were installed. They will allow vehicles entering the highway to merge into the general flow unobstructed and safely. Near settlements and dacha communities, specialists arranged 12 bus stops with pull-in bays and sidewalks. Traffic lights were installed at pedestrian crossings nearby. Interchanges, junctions, stops and pedestrian crossings are equipped with external street lighting, which will provide the necessary visibility at night. The total length of the lighting lines is more than 10 km. New road signs and thermoplastic road markings will help drivers navigate the section.

      Road workers also reinforced the shoulders and built a new drainage system for the roadway. Within the boundaries of the water protection zones at the Muravyikha and Serezha rivers and the Vodopre stream, a closed storm sewer with a filtration system for runoff containing harmful impurities and reagents was installed. At the 80th km, specialists built an underground wildlife crossing on a wild animal migration route, and a mesh fence was installed along the road approaches to it.
