Nizhny Novgorod Region strengthens cultural and educational ties with Brazil.

According to the press service of the regional government, Deputy Governor Oleg Berkovich held a meeting with a Brazilian delegation headed by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Russia, Sérgio Rodrigues dos Santos. The visit took place within the framework of developing bilateral cooperation in culture, education and science.

The parties summed up the results of joint events held in Nizhny Novgorod and discussed prospects for cooperation in the coming years. Special attention was paid to attracting students from Brazil to universities in the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

"Our region is rightfully considered one of the leading scientific, educational and innovation centers of the Russian Federation. About seven thousand foreign students study here each year. Unfortunately, only two students from Brazil are studying in the region — at N.I. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University, but I am sure that this number can be many times higher," Oleg Berkovich said.

He also stressed that the Nizhny Novgorod Region already actively cooperates with Brazil in the cultural sphere: the region hosts a Brazilian Film Festival (12+), and Portuguese language courses have been organized as part of the "Friendship Club."

Sérgio Rodrigues dos Santos expressed interest in expanding scientific and educational ties with the region and emphasized the significance of Nizhny Novgorod as a center of culture and science. He also supported the idea of creating a joint film about Nadezhda Bulycheva — an opera singer from the Nizhny Novgorod Region who in the 19th century bought seven Brazilian women out of slavery.

In addition, the meeting participants discussed the development of interregional cooperation. Already today Gorodetsky District cooperates with the municipality of Trindade, and Voskresensky — with the city of Campina das Missões. In the future — the establishment of sister-city ties between Dzerzhinsk and the city of Jundiaí, as well as partnerships with the Brazilian states of Bahia, São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul.

At the end of the meeting the guests were shown photographic works by Mark Ferres from the collections of the Russian Museum of Photography. The delegation also visited the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, the Viktor Vasnetsov exhibition at the Manege, and paid tribute to those who fell in the Great Patriotic War at the Eternal Flame.

Earlier it was reported that Nizhny Novgorod municipalities have established relations with 85 foreign cities in 28 countries. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
