Cleanup work continues in Kstovsky District to eliminate the consequences of petroleum contamination in the waters of the Chyornaya River. According to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, the plan is to complete the water-area cleanup by the end of the current week.
According to the agency, the first survey of the area was carried out on November 6 after reports from local residents. During the inspection, together with the laboratory of the State Budgetary Institution of the Nizhny Novgorod Region "Ecology of the Region," contamination of the water body was recorded, including near the village of Cheremisskoye. It was found that the source of the contamination was a spill of petroleum products in the railway right-of-way. Due to natural gradients, the substances entered the river and then the pond.
From November 6 to 7, water and soil samples were taken for laboratory analysis. At the same time, the Kstovsky District administration carried out priority work — an earthen embankment was constructed on site to stop the spread of the contamination.
On November 11, an on-site meeting was held with representatives of the Ministry of Ecology, the environmental prosecutor's office, Rosprirodnadzor and OJSC Russian Railways. Specialists took additional samples to assess environmental damage, and a state of heightened readiness was declared in the area.
The ministry added that today, November 12, OJSC Russian Railways is beginning cleanup of the contaminated area in the railway right-of-way.
The Ministry of Ecology emphasizes that the situation is under close supervision.
Earlier it was reported that specialists from Rosprirodnadzor had opened an investigation into the oil product spill in Kstovsky District.
