The covering of the open channels at the Nizhny Novgorod Aeration Station has been completed.

      The CEO of Teploenergo JSC, Dmitry Sivokhin, gave a tour for journalists at the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station and spoke about the completion of an important stage of modernization — covering the open channels through which untreated wastewater is conveyed.

      The covering work began in August and was fully completed by the end of October as part of the water utility's investment program. Over three months the contractor covered 253 linear meters of channels, with a total cover area of 1,500 square meters. At the same time four air purification units were installed, which significantly reduced the level of unpleasant odors in the station area. The exact cost of the covers will be known in November after the verified cost estimate is finalized.

      According to the CEO, the open channels are not the only source of odors at the station, but they create the largest evaporation surface area. "The need arose after exchanging experiences with other regions. We were in Samara, Moscow and a number of other cities. There they told us that to reduce the station's background impact you need to eliminate the contact between the effluent and oxygen," Sivokhin emphasized.

      As noted by the director of the contracting organization, Alexander Rybanov, the use of fiberglass structures provided strength, resistance to aggressive environments and economic efficiency. Thanks to these covers of the open channels, the gas analyzer no longer detects exceedances of the permissible concentration.

      "This was one of our longstanding recommendations — to close the inlet channels. Today it has been done. One of the unorganized sources at the station has now become an organized, controllable one, with filters. Work continues," said Elmurod Rasulmukhammedov, executive director of the Russian Ecological Movement and a member of the Ministry of Natural Resources' council.

      To date the first stage of the reconstruction has been completed by more than 98%. Remaining comments/deficiencies are being addressed. Commissioning works are being carried out in parallel, including the start-up of biological processes in the new facilities.

      The second stage of the reconstruction is planned to begin in 2026, and the completion of all work is expected by 2029–2030.
