Nizhny Novgorod families propose turning the stretch of Malaya Pokrovskaya Street from Bolshaya Pokrovskaya to Architect Haritonov Street into a pedestrian zone for newlyweds. The initiative was submitted to the administration of Nizhny Novgorod by the City Community of Young Families, the mayor’s press service reported.

As noted by the community’s chairman, Sergey Porkhunov, the idea was born out of a desire to support young spouses and create a comfortable area for them in the historic city center. The Nizhny Novgorod Marriage Registration Office, where dozens of couples register every day, is located near this section. Therefore it makes sense for a nearby place to appear where young families could spend time after the ceremony without obstructing traffic or suffering discomfort from city traffic. He added that creating such a street could become the first project of its kind in Russia implemented in the historic part of a city.

The city’s Department of Transport and Road Management said the initiative is interesting but requires careful study to ensure convenience for all road users. Any possible changes will be announced additionally.

The department also reported that major repairs on the section of Malaya Pokrovskaya are being completed: cobblestone sidewalks, the carriageway, drainage and outdoor lighting have already been installed. Overall readiness of the site at the beginning of November is 90%. All work is planned to be completed in the first ten days of the month.

Recall that the capital renovation of Malaya Pokrovskaya Street is part of the redevelopment project for the historic Zapochainya neighborhood. It was previously reported that 65 million rubles from the city budget are planned to be allocated for the installation of a fence around building No. 1 on Malaya Pokrovskaya Street, which houses the FSB directorate for the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

It was earlier reported that on the eve of National Unity Day a Nizhny Novgorod couple registered their marriage against the backdrop of Konstantin Makovsky’s painting "The Appeal of Minin."
