Nizhny Novgorod residents will be able to receive free genetic testing of embryos during IVF.

      Federal authorities have approved an initiative by Nizhny Novgorod parliamentarians to provide preimplantation genetic diagnosis free of charge as part of IVF procedures. The decision, proposed by the Expert Health Council under the Social Committee of the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast Legislative Assembly, will come into force in 2026. This was reported by the chairman of the regional parliament, Evgeny Lyulin, on his channel on MAX.

      "There is one less obstacle on the way for families dreaming of becoming parents with the help of IVF," Lyulin wrote.

      He emphasized that the Federation supported the initiative of the Nizhny Novgorod residents, thanks to which the necessary medical procedures will be carried out free of charge from 2026 under the compulsory health insurance policy (OMS).

      Lyulin explained that this concerns preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), which helps detect possible developmental abnormalities in the future child even before embryo transfer. Previously, such a procedure cost from 40,000 rubles and up, which became a serious financial barrier for many families.

      At the proposal of Nizhny Novgorod lawmakers, from 2026 PGD will be included in the State Guarantees Program and become available free of charge. Half a billion rubles are planned to be allocated from the budget to implement the initiative nationwide.

      It was previously reported that Nizhny Novgorod Oblast will allocate 17.7 million rubles for genetic analysis of embryos.

      Also, recall that in 2025 around three thousand in vitro fertilization procedures are planned in the region, of which 933 quotas will be financed from the regional budget.
