Updated architectural and artistic concepts have been approved in Nizhny Novgorod for two central streets — the Nizhnevolzhskaya Embankment (from the Chkalov Staircase to the Kanavinsky Bridge) and Alekseevskaya Street (from Minin and Pozharsky Square to Zvezdinka Street). The corresponding decrees have been published on the city administration's website.

The changes are aimed at creating a unified visual style and improving the aesthetic quality of the urban environment.

An analysis of the current state showed that many information structures are outdated, made of poor-quality materials and installed without regard to the architectural features of buildings. One of the main goals of the changes is to regulate the placement of signs and retail outlets. In particular, the Nizhnevolzhskaya Embankment will have clearly defined locations and allowable types of non-stationary retail outlets. These include handcarts, kiosks, pavilions, vending machines, tents, mobile shops (truck-based), and standalone cafés. All objects must be mobile, without foundations, and not exceed three meters in height. Their appearance and dimensions must conform to approved sketches or individually approved designs.

Significant attention has also been paid to the informational design of facades on both streets. The color palette of signs must be restrained and coordinated with the building’s colors. The use of permitted fonts and the placement of structures are strictly regulated: signs must harmonize with architectural elements, not obscure decorative details, and be located within the facade of the respective premises.

The updated requirements also concern the design of entrance groups. All elements — from canopies to entrance doors — must be executed in a unified style, correspond to the building’s architecture and not impair its historical appearance. It is prohibited to install solid metal doors and plastic windows on facades facing the red lines of development. On cultural heritage sites, only authentic materials and solutions agreed with the competent authorities are permitted.

In the case of facade works, decorative and artistic design of fencing is provided for. It may include photorealistic images of the buildings being repaired or stylized visual solutions with positive slogans such as "Everything will be transformed here" and "We’ll fix everything soon."

Earlier reports noted the approval of changes to the architectural and artistic concepts of Minin, Gruzinskaya and Bolshaya Pokrovskaya streets, as well as the Verkhnevolzhskaya Embankment.
