Halloween in Russian: how Pumpkin Spas differs from its Western counterpart

Pumpkin Spas is a relatively new holiday that has emerged in Russia in recent years. It appeared as a kind of response to the Western Halloween and symbolizes gratitude to the earth for the harvest.
History and meaning of Pumpkin Spas
In the Orthodox calendar there are three Spas feasts: Apple, Honey and Nut. In 2023 another one was added — Pumpkin Spas, which coincides with Halloween.
Mythology researcher Dmitry Paukov told 360.ru that there is no separate veneration of the pumpkin in Orthodox and pagan traditions. However, from October 31 to November 1 Veles Night is observed, which has features similar to the Western Halloween. On Veles Night people believed in a connection with the otherworld and performed various rites.
Unlike the Western holiday, which emphasizes the uncanny and mysticism, Pumpkin Spas in Russia is perceived as a day of thanksgiving for the harvest. This holiday symbolizes the end of harvesting vegetables and fruits, which is especially relevant in the autumn season.
Traditions and customs
Esotericist Sergey Shmelyov notes that Halloween originates from the ancient Celtic festival Samhain. On that day people performed rituals related to spirits and witchcraft. Over time the holiday transformed into a masquerade and became a festive occasion.
In Russia Pumpkin Spas can also be an occasion for merriment, but with an emphasis on traditions and culture. Schools and cultural centers can organize fairs with pumpkins, baked goods and other autumn treats. Workshops for making pumpkin crafts, contests for the largest pumpkin or the best costume can also be held.
On Pumpkin Spas it is customary to prepare dishes from pumpkin: pies, samsa, soups, cakes, cookies and porridges. Pumpkin is not only tasty but also healthy. It contains potassium, magnesium, sodium and fiber, which have beneficial effects on health.
Benefits of pumpkin
Clinical dietitian Anna Belousova notes that pumpkin is a valuable source of vitamins and minerals. It contains beta-carotene, which is beneficial for vision, immunity and skin health. Pumpkin also contains a lot of vitamin C, which helps strengthen blood vessels and prevent chronic diseases.
However, it should be remembered that vitamin C is destroyed by enzymes, so pumpkin is not recommended to be stored for long. It is best to prepare dishes from it immediately after purchase.
