Nizhny Novgorod is hosting the interregional scientific and practical oncology conference "Volga Lights" for the eighth time.
24 October 2025 09:49 Society — In Nizhny Novgorod, the interregional interdisciplinary scientific and practical oncology conference "Volga Lights VIII" is taking place. The annual event has brought together representatives from various regions of the country: leading specialists in oncology, surgery, cardiology, gynecology, urology, pathomorphology, radiology, chemotherapy and palliative care, nurses and healthcare administrators. Representatives of several patient communities also joined the participants.
Over three days the conference will feature more than 250 scientific presentations and about 20 thematic sessions. Organizers will hold a brain-ring for residents, an oncology-awareness olympiad, an oncology dictation, and the "Surgical Olympus" competition. Special attention will be paid to the traditional "Patient School": medical professionals will discuss with patients topics of nutrition, physical activity, rehabilitation, psychological support, prevention of lymphedema, as well as the role of charitable foundations and patient organizations in supporting oncology patients.
According to the regional Ministry of Health, the organizer of the conference is the Research Institute of Clinical Oncology – the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Oncological Dispensary. The event is held with the support of the Association of Oncologists of Russia, the Association of Oncological Institutions of the Volga Federal District, the Privolzhsky Research Medical University, and leading federal and regional medical centers.
Sergey Gamayunov, the chief freelance oncologist of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Ministry of Health and chief physician of the Research Institute of Clinical Oncology – the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Oncological Dispensary, stressed that such industry conferences play an important role in the development of modern oncology.
"Volga Lights is a platform for professional communication, exchange of experience and finding new solutions. We see how the level of interdisciplinary interaction is growing, how ties between regions are strengthening, how medicine is becoming increasingly personalized. Specialists from different fields understand how important it is to combine efforts. Only in this way can we effectively develop oncology services and, ultimately, improve the quality of life of our patients," he said.
Recall that the region is carrying out active work under the "Combating Oncological Diseases" program of the new national project "Longer and More Active Life." The national project began in the country in 2025 at the direction of Russian President Vladimir Putin. It is aimed at the expected increase in life expectancy by 2030 and envisages further modernization of polyclinics, outpatient clinics and feldsher-obstetric stations, attracting an increasing number of qualified medical staff to healthcare institutions, applying new approaches to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases, improving emergency medical care and rehabilitation systems, developing a network of national research centers, and digitalizing the sector.
