Knee replacement surgeries have begun in Balakhna.

      Doctors at the Balakhna Central District Hospital have begun performing high-tech surgeries to replace damaged knee joints. To date, five such surgical procedures have already been successfully performed, said Alexey Nikonov, a representative of the Nizhny Novgorod Region's health department.

      "Most often osteoarthritis develops due to excess weight, previous viral infections, overuse; heredity also plays a role," Nikonov emphasized.

      After the implantation of an artificial joint, patients' chronic pain disappears, mobility is restored, and they can fully bear weight on the leg.

      Inpatient treatment at the hospital takes no more than seven days. The full course of rehabilitation after the operation lasts about 3–4 months. All procedures are free under the compulsory medical insurance (OMS) policy.

      Nikonov noted that a new chief physician was recently appointed at the Balakhna Central District Hospital. The institution is headed by Oleg Chernov.

      Earlier it was reported that Nizhny Novgorod doctors saved a man who had sawed off his hand with a circular saw.
