On October 21, a meeting of the Committee on Ecology and Natural Resources was held at the Legislative Assembly. Parliamentarians discussed the results of children’s specialized environmental camps in 2025.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Assembly Denis Bakiev, deputies of the Legislative Assembly, representatives of the regional government, and the Youth Parliament.
As noted at the meeting, over the past five years the number of tent camps in the Nizhny Novgorod Region has increased 10.5 times. This form of recreation is unique because it allows environmental education to be integrated into children’s everyday lives. Around-the-clock stays in nature help instill a careful attitude toward the environment in them.
“Our committee closely monitors issues of eco-education. Tent eco-camps are an important element of a child’s development through direct, free interaction with nature. It is there that children learn in practice how to live in harmony with the surrounding world, which lays the foundation for a bright environmental future. We are developing an initiative to create a special environmental session where, with the involvement of scientists and public figures, children will be able to prepare projects to preserve the nature of our region,” said Vladislav Atmakhov, Chairman of the Committee on Ecology and Natural Resources.
Since 2024, educational organizations have had the opportunity to receive regional grants to hold children’s environmental tent camps, field expeditions, and hikes. This measure is aimed at expanding programs to increase environmental literacy among the younger generation.
As a result of the competitive selection, six best projects were chosen in 2025. Among them was the expedition “Miles of Nature” from the “Spring and Fairy Tale” center, during which children became acquainted with plants on the territory of the regional natural monument “Gorny Borok — Shavskaya Gorka — Kadnitsy” in the Kstovo district, as well as the project of Lyceum No. 8 of Nizhny Novgorod “Roads to New Horizons,” whose participants took part in kayak trips on the Kerzhenets River and conducted ecological clean-up operations to clear the banks.
“The season of eco-camps and hikes this year has shown how much children and adolescents demand such activities. This is not just recreation in nature, but a full-fledged school of life that teaches responsibility, teamwork, and love for one’s homeland. Over five years the network of tent camps has grown more than tenfold, and thousands of youngsters are involved in environmental activities. Thanks to grant support, new interesting projects are emerging that allow children to study nature in practice and take part in its preservation. We will replicate the experience across all municipalities so that as many young people from Nizhny Novgorod as possible can join this movement,” said Legislative Assembly Chairman Evgeny Lyulin.
